Abstract

The study assessed the constraints of women farmers' engagement in participatory agricultural research in Jabithenan and South Achefer Woredas of the Amhara Region, Ethiopia. Quantitative data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires, while qualitative data were collected using focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that women's participation was affected by several factors, including community beliefs, researchers' and extension workers' attitudes, weakly enforced community bylaws for couples’ participation, the limited number of research institutions and their inefficiency, lack of access to credit, and the excessive focus on model farmers. These factors created barriers for women farmers to participate in agricultural research and development endeavors. The study recommends policy reforms and targeted interventions to enhance women farmers' engagement and empowerment in agricultural research. The interventions could include addressing gender biases, encouraging couples' participation, improving access to credit, and providing more support for non-model farmers.
